Name: Heng Hui Ling
Age: 17 years old
Church: Johor Jaya Presbyterian Church
My name is Heng Hui Ling. I’m 17 this year from Johor Jaya Presbyterian Church, and I was brought up in a Christian home. I’ve been attending Sunday school, a Christian kid’s gathering and church services since I was a kid. Up until Form 2, I’ve blindly followed my parents to church. Even with Sunday school, I never understood the bible. I didn’t know my responsibilities as a Christian, what we should and shouldn’t do, and didn’t even know the true purpose of the church community.
It was in 2017, I was in Form 2 and was introduced to YFC through Bee Bee, a YFC staff. It was in 2017 that I first joined Project Serve 1. It was my first serious bible camp and I was afraid to talk to people. I was very quiet during small group sessions and afraid to talk. It was only later that I realized people were friendly. I slowly opened up, talked to people, gained so much bible knowledge and made many friends. It was my first time learning about quiet time and bible studying which was very unfamiliar to me because I didn’t know where to start. But the YFC staff were really nice, step by step they helped me learned, improved and listened to God’s word.
In 2018, I learnt how to lead small groups and how to befriend others. It was in the 2018 Project Serve 1 that I played the role of an assistant group leader although I didn’t know how to lead small group and didn’t know how to lead in quiet time. But even in such a difficult task, I’m grateful for my group leader, Liew Ting. Although there were some challenging group members, we were able to overcome it with God’s strength. I was also surprised with myself for being very patient with my members, teaching each one of them to read the bible. As I was leading the group, it was also a great time of learning.
Through YFC, I’ve learnt many creative evangelism methods such as four symbols, egg tart, exam support kit and many more. YFC would often organize street evangelism and some evangelistic events. We would then be able to apply the different creative evangelism methods during these events. This really helped those, who have heard the gospel before but have yet to accept it, to have a deeper understanding. The gospel is not just a responsibility but eternal life for everyone. For people to accept this salvation, we need to eagerly share this good news with our family, friends and non-believers.
I believe YFC could look for more sources of financial support to run events. By doing this, they would not have to worry about finances if they could share the vision of YFC at different churches or organize some fund-raising events. I hope YFC would continue to lead young people like myself to lean on the word of God.
I believe YFC played an important role among my teenage circle of friends, which was to teach and be there for us. If we had problems that were difficult to share with our families, we could count on the YFC staff as they would guide us as we face the issues or counsel us. Of course, YFC also constantly checked up on us. In school, it was easy to be influenced by the friends around us but the YFC staff would bring us back even if we went astray. This is something that I’m grateful for. Therefore, YFC has been very important to me, in fact they have played an irreplaceable role in my life.
